What Do You Mean "Saved"?
Part II
What do you mean “saved”? In the last lesson we looked at an overview of this subject and introduced the four spiritual laws. Those four spiritual laws are a simple overview of what the Bible teaches about eternal salvation. In this lesson we want to look more closely at the subject of sin.
First Law | Second Law | Third Law | Fourth Law |
All Have Sinned |
The Result of Sin is Separation from God |
God Loves You and Jesus Died for You |
You Must Accept Jesus as Your Personal Lord and Savior |
- WHAT IS SIN?
- To do wrong
- I John 3:4 - Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
- If God says in the Bible not to do something and I do it -- that is a sin.
- Example: Adultery - sex with someone other than my spouse.
- To fail to do right
- James 4:17 - Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.
- If I know I am supposed to do something and I do not do it, then it is a sin.
- Example: I know I should attend worship services regularly but don’t.
- To do what I think is wrong
- Romans 14:23 - But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.
- If I think something is a sin, even if it’s not; but I think it is and I do it anyway, then for me it is a sin.
- Example: Eating meat sacrificed to idols (study all of Romans 14).
- WHAT CAUSES US TO SIN?
- Our sin nature
- Romans 5:12 - Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned.
- Our love of the world
- I John 2:15-17 - Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
- Our own lust
- James 1:13-15 - Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.
- WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF SIN?
- Galatians 5:19-21 - Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
- Revelation 21:8 - But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.
All of us are sinners. Not all of us commit every sin, but all of us sin. It is true that some sins are worse than others as far as the result of the sin is concerned. But as far as our relationship to God is concerned, one sin is as bad as another.
