The Most Important Question Ever Asked
Part III
The first lesson answered the question by showing from the Bible that Jesus is God. The previous lesson discussed the Trinity - that there is one God who manifests Himself in three personalities. This lesson focuses on the virgin birth of Jesus.
- THE VIRGIN BIRTH OF JESUS IS PLAINLY TAUGHT IN THE GOSPEL
- In the Angel's announcement to Mary
Luke 1:26-35
26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth,
27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 And coming in, he said to her, "Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you."
29 But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was.
30 The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God.
31 "And behold, you wil conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus.
32 "He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David;
33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end."
34 Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?"
35 The angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.
- In the Angel's announcement to Joseph
Matthew 1:18-25
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows; when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.
19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.
20 But when he had considered this, behold, and angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
21 "She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins."
22 No all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which translated means, "God with us."
24 And Jospeh awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife,
25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.
- THE VIRGIN BIRTH OF JESUS IS CONFIRMED BY OTHER SCRIPTURES
- In the Garden of Eden, God spoke to the serpent and made a prediction
Genesis 3:15 - And I will put enmity between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel."
- The phrase "her seed" is highly unusual in this historical time frame.
- They always traced the blood lines through the father, not the mother.
- In the prophecy of Isaiah 700 years before Christ
Isaiah 7:14 - Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call his name Immanuel
- This is a difficult passage, but many times the Bible will explain the difficult passages in another passage and Matther 1:23 refers to Jesus' birth.
- In the writings of the Apostle Paul
Galatians 4:4 - But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law.
- Paul writes that Jesus was "born of a woman" which again is a highly unusual way of stating it in that historical time period.
- They always traced the blood lines through the father, not the mother.
- THE VIRGIN BIRTH OF JESUS HAS MEANING IN YOUR LIFE
- It demonstrates that Jesus, the second person of the Trinity, has always existed.
John 1:1,14 - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
- It demonstrates that God does perform miracles - things are supernatural
- It demonstrates that Jesus was 100% God as well as 100% man
- It demonstrates that Jesus is able to save you from your sins if you will accept Him as your personal Lord and Savior
Jesus did not have an earthly father. He had always existed. He became a man. His birth was a miracle because there was no human father. The miracle of the virgin birth demonstrates the power of God and assures us that Jesus is able to save us from our sins if we accept Him as a personal Lord and Savior.
